Wei Villa in West Lake National Park, Hangzhou, China. The park is beautiful, but crowded. My husband and I found a rare ten minutes of quiet here.

May I also recommend Wisley Gardens in Surrey, England. I was there in the days before digital photography! Also, the Rock Garden in Hamilton, Ontario, at the Royal Botanical Gardens. The tulip display in spring is wonderful, and my son pointed out a Whomping Willow.

Why is it that the gardens I visit are so extraordinarly different to those designed and shown at garden design festivals-St Albans,previously Westonbirt and Chaumont in France or some of the prize winning gardens at Chelsea. The gardens open for visiting just do not have that 'out of the box' , 'pushing the boundaries' mindset. Why is that ? Do the creators not have the ideas or do they not care for the ideas. In fact, are these gardens really enjoyed and admired for their beauty at all ?
