Thanks Kay, today was amazing out so i went out and did my dead heading of the plants i knew were safe to dead head, and also the ornimental grasses, along with the pruning of a few roses and many other bushes. the weather here in southern ontario today is amazing! its about 17C out here. i'm supposed to be on nights right now but the weather is to good to give up and plan to get back out there doing more clean up and such once some pain i am having goes away.

Shelly, I'm in Ohio and we cut down our perineal grasses in early March so they're about 2 to 3 inches tall. They will definitely come back bigger and better this year if you do that.

wondering, i have some perrenial grasses (like 5'tall stuff) but the winter pushed down the dead looking grass, is it dead and should be cutt off at ground level? or is it these stocks that will come back to life later in the spring?

thanks for the info about the coffee grounds, always wanted to try that, hope they like more than just starbucks, lol...

i read that using coffee grounds around my hostas would prevent slugs. I am fortunate to live within walking distance of starbucks so gave it a try. the plants are thriving and no slugs. apparently the acid in the grounds is toxic to the slugs. it also encourages earthworms which is good for everything.

My question is what kind of soil helps hostas thrive. I live in SW Oklahoma and it is also very hot in the summers, but I have shade. Suggestion needed on fertilizer too. Thanks.

I live in South Carolina, and my hostas have bloomed 2 or 3 times, starting in early summer, since I have cut off the old ones after they wilt. As long as you buy varieties that are slug-resistant and give them enough shade, they will do beautifully in the south!
