i divide mine in spring when the shoots are easy to see and i know where to make the divisions. i use a a shovel with a long narrow blade and a short handle. i don't know what the official name for it is but it is my favorite type of gardening shovel because it goes deep and i can get under the roots leaving a fair amount of soil when transplanting. the blade is about 15 inches long and maybe 6 inches wide. they are available at any hardware store and walmart for about $20. sum and substance is a huge hosta. i have one also and have divided it several times.

Sum and Substance are fast growers and they spread quickly and easy to transplant...I used a sharp knife to cut through them.

Laura, that sounds like a trenching shovel. They are really handy, especially at cutting thick roots. Trenching shovels and a solid garden tine are excellent tools for dividing perennials. I love Sum and Substance. It is a star in a shady area where you want a big plant.
