Most of my front and back are shaded during the summer because of large large trees. I am always open to new plants to try in my backyard. Can you send other suggestions or better yet photos of your yards?
Sue
I have Astilbe, Lily of the Valley, Bleeding Hearts, Hostas, Foxglove, and Trilliums in my shade gardens. If you go to my photos you will see pictures of them. Hope this helps you. Happy Gardening :)
I can add ferns and lungwort to Terryann's list. I plan to put in Mayapple and Jack-in-the-pulpit next year. My spiderwort does well in the shade, and St. John's Wort seems to grow wherever I put it, sun or shade. I also have Soloman's Seal and Jacob's Ladder out there somewhere, too.
I'd recommend finding 3-4 plants that complement each other and then planting them en masse.
Adding to this great list of low light plants you could also try Japanese Painted Fern, Ligularia, Snakeroot (has a beautiful fragrance), 'Anna belle' Hydrangea and Lamium. There are even a few Heuchera varieties (like Chocolate ruffles) that do well in lower light.
Ligularia (the yellow flowers)
This Spider wort does well with only a few hours of morning sun.
Bleeding Hearts do great in shadier areas.
The large white flowers are the 'Anna belle' Hydrangea
When my Snakeroot blooms in the fall I will post a picture for you. Hope this helps!
