This is the first time I've grown sweet potatoes. I peeked today and there really are big orange things growing in the sand under the vines. Do I wait until it is cold enough to kill the vines to harvest
or do I dig them up on some other schedule?

Like regular potatoes, they can be dug early, but of course will be smaller. Even in our zone, they are left until near frost for most varieties as they are often a 5 month crop. Iwould get a few to taste and then leave the rest for another month or so unless the tops start dying back.
