About Me:
Been gardening on the west slope of the Sierras for about 10 years....we have short, but defined, winters...summer can be extremely hot (105 in the shade)....great for tomatoes...bad for Shasta Daisies, have to plan for afternoon shade big time and watering systems have to be well done.

Wha-cha-ma-calits and thing-a-ma-gigs

Hi Danny. You left a message on my profile back in June and I just now read it. So sorry for the delay and thank you. Wow! You certainly have your challenges in gardening where you live. Your garden is beautiful! When I saw the blue-edged, white bearded Iris my heart melted. If it's possible to have a favorite...the Iris is it for me!

It does help, I'm going to try it. I got out of the habit of screening my compost, but then I let it sit so long before I use it, not much is left to screen out. Can compost lose it's nutrient value if it sits too long?

I was looking at your photo's, the one with the wheelbarrow and compost screen. Do you just screen it when you pitch it in the wheelbarrow at that angle? does that work?

Danny FYI I posted a picture of the knife in the topic.

We use butter knives ourselves but a butcher knife would work as well for larger "landscape" projects Danny. I walked into the house last night and one of the bent knives was sitting on top of a cabinet. I will take and post a picture. We usually just hold the thin end in a vice and gently bend the handle over 90 degrees.

Thanks for the nice note Danny!
Adak is waaaay far north of me, but our Southeast Alaska gardening season is short & sweet as well. If I didn't live here I'd opt for California, too! Your photos are beautiful. That indigo blue & white bearded iris is INCREDIBLE! I drool when I look at your slideshow :)
