Jackie: It is hard to determine why your roses have died without more details. There are always so many potential reasons. I also have clay soil but my roses do fine. Here are some of the most common reasons for rose failure maybe one of these will…

When to start your containers in doors largely depends on what you are growing. If you are growing from seed they usually specify on the seed pack when to start. I started my Canna lilies about 3 weeks ago. What are you growing?

I was just talking to my husband about it yesterday and I showed him some pics from 'Birds and Blooms' and had him read the article with it --we are planning on cutting our garden in half to give more lawn space in our backyard and I think this idea…

What zone are you in? I give my roses a lot of winter protection, and I am very careful about buying roses that are hardy hardy hardy. My father-in-law has gorgeous roses (he's in Holland, so it's a different climate than my zone 5b) in really sandy…

Hmmm. I mostly start vegetables in side, and in February I begin the slow starters like peppers and parsley. For flowers I'd start things like impatiens, geraniums and coleous (sp?). You can also start pot marigold indoors this early, as they can ha…

About Me:
I love to garden, mostly plants and flowers. I have a dog, a Bichon Friese, named Polarbear, who is essentialy my granddog. My husband's name is Ed and he retired from Commercial Fishing on Lake Erie 4 years ago. I will turn 61 in April and Ed will turn 69, Our 2 children have been estranged from us for a few years (our choice, through their behaviour). We have clay for soil around our home, which makes it very difficult to garden and would love some tips on what to grow in this soil because not much seems to last for more than a couple of years before it dies or just plain looks bad, I am thinking of going, more for desert type plants that will survive the hot summer months.

This may be a goofy question but, is your dog in the same yard as your rose bushes. When a dog uses a rose bush as a hiking post ( that was as gently as I could put it ), it absolutely kills the plant, even if it is with in a few feet. If your clay is holding to much moisture at the roots, they will no survive a single season. Roses love raised beds, because they drain so well. Try a wisky barrell with gravel in the bottom and soil over that. I have them on my deck and the climbers grow along the rails of the deck. Worm castings mixed in with the soil is a great starter and then about once a quarter use worm juice or compost tea.
